Junior Kindergarten

2 Teachers (1 ECE, 1 Assistant)
20 Children
Ages 4-5 yrs

The junior kindergarten room consists of children who are of age to attend junior kindergarten in schools. In this programme, parents have the choice to send their children to school for the morning or have them stay with us all day. For parents who would like for their children to attend a kindergarten in a school, there are currently 3 options available:

1) Attend Blessed John XX111 Catholic Elementary School.

The kindergarten classroom is located right beside the day care classroom. Children simply transfer from room to room without having to leave the premises.

2) Attend Gateway Public School

Children attending Gateway Public School have a short walk to and from the school accompanied by a staff from the day care

3) Attend French Emersion School

For this option, children travel by school bus to and from both schools

** PLEASE NOTE: Children in our junior kindergarten programme must attend school in the mornings **

After school, children return to the day care for a nutritious, catered lunch and then participate in our afternoon programme. In the afternoon, children are immersed in a fun and stimulating programme which includes creative, cognitive, social, language, gross motor and fine motor activities. All areas of development are enhanced through a variety of exciting learning opportunities which are appropriate for this age group.

Children who stay with us all day participate in a morning programme comparable to attending kindergarten in a school. Teachers have access to and knowledge of the Toronto District School Board’s junior and senior kindergarten curriculums. They are aware of the skills and abilities necessary for the completion of these two grades. They strive to develop and implement a programme which ensures that children are working towards attaining these skills. Having a smaller teacher-child ratio than typical kindergarten classes do, allows for children to have more one-to-one time with their teachers. This also enables teachers to develop more individualized experiences for children according to their needs and abilities.

Senior Kindergarten

2 Teachers (1 ECE, 1 Assistant)
20 Children
Ages 5-6 yrs

The senior kindergarten room consists of children who are of age to attend senior kindergarten in a school. Parents who enroll their children in this programme currently have 3 options available for kindergarten:

1) Attend Blessed John XX111 Catholic Elementary School.

The kindergarten classroom is located right beside the day care classroom. Children simply transfer from room to room without having to leave the premises.

2) Attend Gateway Public School

Children attending Gateway Public School have a short walk to and from the school accompanied by a staff from the day care

3) Attend French Emersion School

For this option, children travel by school bus to and from both schools

** PLEASE NOTE: Children in our senior kindergarten programme must attend school in the afternoons **

Senior kindergarten children enjoy a developmentally-appropriate morning programme filled with stimulating and challenging learning opportunities. Planned activities promote the development of skills and abilities in a variety of areas (i.e. cognition, creativity, language, social skills, gross motor, fine motor, etc). After a nutritious catered lunch, children depart for school. Upon their return to the center after school, they enjoy less structured activities, as well as the opportunity to participate in our Homework Club. The Homework Club allows children to complete work that has been sent home from school while at the day care. This way they will have more time to spend on family activities once they are at home. This is especially helpful for children who are here at the day care until 5:30pm or 6:00pm on a regular basis.

Nursery Programme

2 Teachers (1ECE, 1Assistant)
20 Children
Ages 4-5 (junior kindergarten age)

Between the months of September and June, we also offer a Nursery School Programme. This programme is perfect for parents who are looking for a place for their children to play, learn and socialize for a couple of hours a day. Our Nursery School Programme will allow children to interact with peers their own age, while benefiting from our junior kindergarten programme. Children have the opportunity to build and enhance skills in all areas of development. This is a great opportunity for children to prepare for the transition to senior kindergarten.

This programme is offered from 9:00am-11:30am from Monday to Friday. Since it is offered when some of our junior kindergarten children are in school, spaces are limited. As well, please note that there will be no Nursery School offered during the following times:

1) School PA Days
2) March Break
3) Christmas Break
4) Summer Vacation ( July & August)

** Nursery School parents will be notified of the dates for all of the above in the beginning of September once we have received this information from the schools**

Fees for both kindergarten programmes include before and after school care throughout the school year. They also include PA Days, school holidays, March Break, Christmas Break and summer vacation. Our summer programme is less structured and involves weekly field trips, special outings, theme days and guest speakers/entertainers. Birthdays, holidays, family and cultural traditions and special occasions are celebrated year round!
The development of each child is observed and recorded by their teachers on an ongoing basis. Developmental checklists and reports will be shared with parents at certain times throughout the year. We would like parents to share their child’s likes, dislikes and accomplishments from home, so that teachers can gain a better understanding of each individual child.

All structured programming is done according to a Thematic Curriculum Approach. Each month, a new theme or topic will be introduced and used as a basis for planning activities. Not every activity will follow the theme. Themes are guidelines and help to organize teaching and learning. All programme plans are flexible, leaving room to incorporate the interest and abilities of the children enrolled in the programme. Teachers have experience with Jolly Phonics, Sign Language and the use of Picture Symbols. All of these will be incorporated into both the junior and senior kindergarten rooms.
